Henry Joseph Cox, 79, Peru, known to most of Miami County as “Broadway Joe” or “Waving Joe,” passed away at 9:23 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Aperion Care of Peru.
Born June 17, 1946, in Peru, Indiana, he was the son of Albert and Mary (Tyler) Cox. He had worked for Heppe’s Scrapyard and Secondary Metals as well as Drago Amusements. Joe spent many years waving at Peru residents on the corner of 10th and Broadway. He was a talented metal worker and enjoyed combing his talents with a torch and a problem to find a solution. He loved the Chicago Cubs and was always eager to share this passion with his family.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews, including a special niece and nephew who took care of their uncle over the past few years, Misty (Gerald) Booth, Peru; and Bill Walker, Peru; great-niece, Savannah Rojo; brother, Dale (Luann) Cox; and sister-in-law, Jackie Cox.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Joyce “PeeWee” (Ben) Lewis, Mary Catherine Cox, Beverly Sue (Ernie) Hizer, Nancy Walker, Charles Cox, and Robert Cox.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be from 2-4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2025, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Randy Smoot officiating. Private burial will be in Reyburn Cemetery, Peru.
