Don E. Fisher

January 19, 1916 — March 10, 2014

Donaldson E. "Don" Fisher, 98, Peru, and formerly of Mexico, passed away at 4:55 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2014 at Blair Ridge Health Campus, Peru.

Born January 19, 1916 at his family farmstead near Mexico, Indiana, he was the son of the late Carl C. and Marie Donaldson Fisher. On November 3, 1956, in Rochester, Indiana, he was married to the former Dorothy D. Dunlap Stanton, and she preceded in death on April 18, 2004.

After graduating in 1930 from Jefferson Township High School in Mexico, Don attended Cleary College in Ypsilanti, Michigan where he studied Business Administration while working for Ford Motor Company. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1942 and served his country until 1946 as a Sergeant during World War II. Following his return from active duty, Don worked as a salesman for National Vitamin Products while he was working part-time for the United States Post Office. Don then became a fulltime city mail carrier and served those on Peru City Route Four for thirty-three years before retiring in 1986.

Don was a man of great faith and served in many ways in the Mexico Community where he lived. He was an active member of Mexico First Brethren Church where he served as Church Treasurer and Trustee, and with great dedication, Don served many years with the Mexico Volunteer Fire Department and was Fire Chief for several years.

In his free time, Don enjoyed stamp collecting and fishing. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending his time on the banks of the Eel River between Chili and Hoover. For many years, he and his wife Dorothy enjoyed square-dancing with Paws and Taws Square Dance Club.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Stephen E. Fisher and wife Linda, Muskegon, Mich.; a daughter, Donna E. Stiver and husband Timothy, Roann; five grandchildren, Jason and Eric Fisher, and Amy Thelen, all of Michigan, and Jacob and Michaela Stiver, both of Roann. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Sophia, Addison, and Andrew Fisher and Troy and Abby Thelen.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, C. Clinton "Bud" Fisher and his wife Betty; and one sister Alice Eileen Knauff and her husband Glen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014 at Mexico First Brethren Church with Pastor Ron Laudenschlager and Pastor Brad Eckerley officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mexico.

Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m. on Thursday at McClain Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
