Nora Magdalene "Maggie" Van Dalsen Obituary

Nora Magdalene Van Dalsen, nèe Graham, 87, formerly of Macy, Indiana, and Albany, Kentucky, passed away Saturday morning, February 17, 2018, in the Christopher Center of Our Lady of Peace in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Born on September 11, 1930, in Albany, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Marian Bradley Graham and the former Edna Sheckles.  On November 19, 1946, in Glasgow, Kentucky, she was married to Joseph M. Van Dalsen, and he preceded her in death on July 9, 1990.

Maggie was one of ten children who grew up near Albany in South Central Kentucky.  She roamed the hills with her siblings, Willard, John, Mabel, and Betty, all now deceased, and her surviving brothers, Campbell, Shelby, James, and Jack, all of Albany, and sister, Dianna, of Louisville, KY.
As a child, Maggie played the guitar and sang gospel songs with family and friends.  In the 1940’s, she moved to Muncie, Indiana, with her older sister.  While there, she met and married Joseph M. Van Dalsen and lived most of her adult life in Macy, Indiana.  She was a member of the former Macy United Methodist Church and Caney Branch Baptist Church, Albany Kentucky.  She was a fifty-year member of the former Macy Chapter of the Eastern Star, Macy, Indiana.

Maggie was a country girl, practical and wise, and she always placed family first.  She was a Christian and wonderful caregiver, wife, mother, friend, and grandmother. In the last years of her life, she delighted in seeing her daughters and grandchildren, as well as looking out into the Virginia hills and woods to see the deer, birds, and other wildlife.

She is also survived by her two daughters, Joyce Ann (Bing) Spitler, Lake Monticello, VA; and Patricia Jane (Daniel) Angeline, North Padre Island, Texas; one grandson, Scott Joseph (Amy Jones) Spitler; great-grandchildren, Emily Rose and Aiden Joseph Spitler, Richmond, VA; step granddaughter, Nanette Angeline (Kevin) Durr, Remsen, IA; and three step-grandchildren, Whitney Rose, Lamars, IA; Jackie Marie Durr Kass, Kemsen, IA; and Curtis Daniel Durr, Minneapolis, MN.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one son, Joseph M. Van Dalsen II.
